Ave verum corpus, natum ex Maria Virgine,
Vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine.
Cujus latus vero fluxit sanguine:
Esto nobis praegustatum, mortis in examine.

Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary. who truly
suffered and was sacrificed on the cross for mankind.
From whose pierced side flowed water and blood.
O mayʼst thou, dear Lord, be given at deathʼs hour to be my food:

Words from a sequence hymn for Corpus Christi by Pope Innocent VI (d. 1342)
