Ave Maria – Bach/Gounod

A very famous hymn to the mother of God.
This was originally a harpsichord piece - Prelude No.1 from the first book of Das Wohltempierte Klavier - Gounod had the clever idea of putting a vocal line over Bach's original keyboard part to make this now famous song.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum;
benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
