Ave Maria – Bach/Gounod

Full Title Ave Maria by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), arr. Charles Gounod (1818-1893)

Notes This was originally a harpsichord piece - Prelude No.1 from the first book of Das Wohltempierte Klavier - Gounod had the clever idea of putting a vocal line over Bach's original keyboard part to make this now famous song.

Duration To Follow

Performers required Organ and Soprano or Tenor, OR Organ alone

Source of Printed Music Organ arrangement by Rob Peters, published on IMSLP (cleverly puts the tune in the pedals)

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum;
benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
